Funeral live streaming at St Mary's Cathedral

Across the road from Hyde Park, St Mary's Cathedral holds state and archdiocesan funerals as well as family funerals. We have filmed funerals in the cathedral and streamed them to a private link for people who could not be there.

About St Mary's Cathedral

Work on the sandstone cathedral began in 1866 to a design by William Wardell. The two front spires were only finished in 2000. The building is 107 metres long with a nave 24.3 metres wide. Under the sanctuary is a crypt with mosaic floors, where several Sydney archbishops are buried.

A funeral Mass in a building this long is hard to follow from the back pews, and harder again from home. We bring at least three cameras so the stream picks up the readings, the eulogy and the final commendation. Parking near the cathedral is on the street or in nearby public car parks, so we arrive well before the family.

Questions families ask

Can a funeral at St Mary's Cathedral be live streamed?

Yes. We have filmed funerals at St Mary's before. The cathedral office has its own funeral guidelines, so your funeral director checks with them ahead of the day that filming is fine. Once that is sorted, we set up early and the family gets a private link to pass around.

St Mary's already streams Mass on YouTube. Is a funeral covered by that?

The cathedral streams its regular Masses on its YouTube channel and through Sydney Catholic. Whether a funeral is streamed depends on what the family arranges with the cathedral office. When we film it, the family has its own private link and keeps a recording of the whole service.

Planning a service?

Tell us the date and the venue and we will take care of the rest with your funeral director.

Stream Catcher is an independent live streaming business and is not part of St Mary's Cathedral. Some venues have their own rules about filming, and your funeral director can confirm them.
