About St Michael's Melkite Catholic Cathedral
The Melkite community took over the former St Kieran's and inaugurated it as their cathedral in 1977, with the consecration following in 1981. St Michael's is the seat of the Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy of Saint Michael Archangel, set up in 1987. It is a short walk from the University of Sydney.
Most of Sydney's Melkite families have Lebanese or Syrian roots, and services at St Michael's are in Arabic and English. Many have relatives in Lebanon and Syria who cannot travel for a funeral. We send the family a private link, and the recording lets relatives overseas watch at a sensible hour.
